Allowing the GAs to fall behind the main VB version isn't bad for a while. If you change the GAs to a newer version with different capabilities, the host Virtualbox software won't know what the GAs are doing and problems will develop. As the developers update capabilities they put these capabilities in both the main Virtualbox and the GAs ISO.
Software that has to work with partner software has to know what the partner is doing. It is not good to go downloading GAs besides the version that comes with the Virtualbox installer.
